Process:
- Corporate Healthcheck
This is a brief but incisive questionnaire that examines the current policies and procedures of the client. It provides a concise overview identifying the areas of concern that need rectification and the areas of strength that can be developed. This is a free, no-obligation service.

- Fleet Policy Review
If the client elects to take the programme forward, a more in-depth review of the policy and processes is undertaken. This includes a complete policy re-structure and re-write, done in consultation with the Fleet /Health & Safety/HR Departments. If appropriate, employee unions can also be involved, depending on client wishes. The main focus of the policy re-write is that all provisions must be practical and reasonable, identifying clearly the responsibilities of both employer and driver. An integral part of the new policy must be a driver declaration that clearly states that the driver has read, understands, and accepts the provisions of the new policy.
- Cultural Acceptance
It is an essential part of the programme that drivers understand the reasons why it’s being carried out. We achieve this through clear communication and consultation, explaining that a combination of factors including employee welfare and legal requirements mean that we need to make sure we take all reasonable steps to protect our drivers and other road users. It is important that the programme is led from the front by senior management. An example of this could be the CEO making time to go through driver training, or using his/her details as a template for others to follow.
- Information Gathering
In order to get a complete picture of the risks facing every individual driver, we need to collect a large amount of information from a variety of sources. These sources include the Fleet Department, for information on the vehicle, insurance, service history, etc; the driver, for personal information such as age, accident history, driving licence information, and vehicle details if they are a cash taker; DVLA for driver records, taxation information, etc. This is the most onerous part of the programme and involves a thorough system of reviews and chases to ensure the maximum compliance.
- Risk Assessments and Driver Training
ING Risk Assist works with a number of providers to make sure the risk assessment and training products offered are the most suitable to meet the individual needs of each particular fleet. The programme includes an on-line risk assessment as standard, but this is just part of the overall risk management. The results of the risk assessment are combined with all the other information gathered to give a comprehensive view of the risks faced by each driver. This, in turn, allows us to target any training at those individuals who are most in need. Training can take a variety of forms, from remote e-learning modules, through in-house seminars to one-to-one on-road instruction.
- Review
The final part of the programme is a system of regular reviews to ensure that all is functioning properly. Ideally, these are held quarterly, with a full refresh of policy and database information carried out annually.
