Three points for driving whilst using a hand held mobile phone
At present if you are caught driving whilst using a hand held mobile you face a £30 fine and no points. However this has not been enough of a deterrant as many drivers still continue to drive whilst using their hand held mobile phone.
From 27 February 2007 the Road Safety Act is introducing new tougher penalties, you could receive a fixed penalty notice of £60 and a 3 point endorsement on your licence if you arecaught using your hand held mobile phone whilst driving.
The Road Safety Act also introduces the same penalties if the driver does not have proper control of their vehicle i.e. if they are distracted whilst using a hands free mobile phone.
If you as the driver or the police decide to take the matter to court rather than issue the fixed penalty notice you could fax a maximum of £1000 for cars or £2500 for vans, lorries, buses or coaches.
