Cleaner air for London - the Low Emission Zone
As of 4th February 2008 the Greater London Low Emission Zone comes into force intially of heavy diesel engined vehicles over 12 tonnes and gradually this will increase to cover heavy diesel engined vehicles between 5 and 12 tonnes to those between 3.5 and 5 tonnes.

- which vehicles meet the standards

- exemptions relating to GB registered vehicles

The LEZ will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year. It will be enforced by fixed and mobile cameras and will compare vehicles entering the zone against the low emission standards for vehicles affected.
If your vehicles meets the standards, is exempt, has 100% discount or you have already paid the daily charge the image the camera had taken will be automatically deleted.
If your vehicle does not meet the standards but you still wish to travel within the zone there are several options:
- buy a new vehicle which meets the standards
- reorganise fleet journeys within the zone
- modify the vehicle to meet the standards
- pay the daily charge
From 4th February 2008
£200 daily charge for lorries, motor caravans and horseboxes over 12 tonnes
From 7th July 2008
£200 daily charge for buses and coaches over 5 tonnes and lorries, motor caravans
and horseboxes between 3.5 and 12 tonnes
From 4th October 2010
£100 daily charge for large vans and horseboxes 1.2 tonnes unladen to 3 tonnes and
motor caravans between 2.5 and 2.5 tonnes and minibuses below 5 tonnes.
You can pay the daily charge up to 64 days in advance of the day of travel on the day of travel or up to midnight on the first working day after travelling within the zone.
Failure to meet the low emission standards
You may receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PEN) if:
- your vehicle does not meet the standards, you are not exempt or entitled to 100% discount
- you have not registered with TfL
- you have provided an incorrect vehicle registration number or incorrect date of travel when paying the daily charge.
